This is who we are.
SUMOL+COMPAL is the result of a merger that united what is most natural, best quality and most national in the Portuguese universe of non-alcoholic beverages – Sumolis and Compal.
Although this is an entirely new organisation, it has a history of more than 100 years since each of the two companies in the merger have been on the market for more than 50 years. Sumolis began in 1945 as a small company under the name of Refrigor, and Compal began in 1952.
SUMOL+COMPAL enjoys a leading position on the Portuguese drinks and food products market as it already controls or represents some of the best known, most consumed product, and most popular brands in Portugal, with large market shares in carbonated drinks, juices, nectars, still fruit drinks and carbonated or still waters, including flavoured waters.
The merger process began at the close of 2005 when Sumolis and the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Group (CGD) announced they were buying Compal and Nutricafés from Nutrinveste. Nutricafés was sold off in 2006.
In March 2008 Sumolis and the CGD Group agreed on the merger conditions and later SUMOL+COMPAL was incorporated.
Later, on the 14th of August 2008, the Competition Authority approved the merger, subject to some commitments. From then on, the project to bring SUMOL+COMPAL into operation at the start of 2009 was prepared and implemented.
